Lt.. George Philip Basel, USAF (Retired)

George P. Basel, 96, of Charleston, SC, husband of the late Inajean Claussen Basel passed away Thursday, February 25, 2016. A graveside Memorial service will be held Thursday March 10, 2016 in Bethany Cemetery, 10 Cunnington Avenue, at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway.

George was born March 27, 1919, in Seattle, Washington to the late Michael Philip Basel and Elizabeth Freund. He was the fifth of eleven brothers and sisters. He graduated from Seattle Preparatory High School in Seattle and attended Seattle College prior to the advent of World War II. During this time he learned to fly in the Civilian Pilot Program. George entered the Army-Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program in April of 1942, graduating in August of 1942 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was qualified in C-47's and transferred to the 313th Troop Carrier GP in Florence SC where he met the love of his life Inajean Claussen to whom he was married for 64 years. During his war time service, he participated in operations in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, England, France and Holland; notably the Liberation of France, including D-Day airborne operations over Normandy. He remained on active duty in the Air Force until his retirement in 1965. George and Inajean moved to Charleston in 1981 where he was an avid golfer and member of the Shadowmoss Plantation Golf Club for over 25 Years.

In addition to his sister, Sister Patricia Basel, of Spokane, Washington, surviving are Colonel John Michael Basel, USMC (Retired) (Mary Dunlap) of Charleston SC, Mr. George Philip Basel Jr. (Kathy Manfred) of Cimarron, CO; two granddaughters, Brittany Pierce Basel of Boulder CO, and Eliza Hunter Basel of Charleston, SC.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff and caregivers at Brookdale Senior Living and the Roper Hospital ER nurses who attended in his finally days and hours.
