Lt. Colonel Vera Ward Buzard

d. September 27, 2010

Army Lt. Colonel Vera Gwenolyn Ward Buzard, an amazing Veteran, mother and friend, went to meet her Maker on the afternoon of September 27, 2010.  Mrs. Buzard was the widow of Major Robert Edmond Buzard, USMC (retired) and is survived by her daughter, Mary Culberson, of Charleston, her son, Robert Tod Buzard, of Myrtle Beach, twin grandchildren, Shannon and Jessie Culberson, and a great granddaughter, Leah Vera Culberson; her great grandmother's namesake.

Mrs. Buzard was born on October 3, 1917 in Effingham, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Carl and Martha Anderson Ward.  She lacked less than a week of celebrating her 93rd birthday.  She was a Registered Nurse and served overseas with the U.S. Army in World War II.  She retired from her position as a Lt. Colonel and later retired from Maryview Hospital as a Nurse Anesthetist in Portsmouth, VA.  In retirement, Mrs. Buzard was as avid bowler and member of USBC and looked forward to her weekly rendezvous with her friends in her bowling league.  She was a member of the Military Officers Association of America and belonged to the church family of Westminister Presbyterian Church, where she was an active participant in the women's circle group.

Although she will be greatly missed, the family will join in a celebration of Mrs. Buzard's life and will welcome friends at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel, Friday, October 1, 2010 from 1:00 until 3:00.  The memorial service will start at 3:00 pm.  Mrs. Buzard will be laid to rest, with full military honors, in a formal inurnment ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery, Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 9:00 am.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the American Cancer Society located at 5900 Core Road, North Charleston, SC  29406 or to any armed forces charity.
