Emma Louise "Lou" Huddleston Wood, 92, died peacefully on Wednesday evening, February 3, 2016. As we mourn her departure, we celebrate her long and joyous time on this earth. She was truly a unique individual, a free spirit, one of a kind. All who knew her drew inspiration from her cheerful outlook on life, her faith, her generosity and her kindness which she share with all around her.
Born October 9, 1923 in Jasper, Tennessee, Lou was the daughter of Henry Harold Huddleston and Emma Elvira Woodall Huddleston. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Harold Wood, her parents, and her siblings, Harold Huddleston, Kathleen Joyner, Sadie Burgess and Mary Ann McMurray.
First and foremost in Lou's life was her faith and her family. Beyond these, she was most proud of her accomplished career and the many cherished friends she came to know along the way. A graduate of Athens College, she held positions including reporter for a Post Judge Advocate, operating room surgical recorder, Chief Clerk at a WWII Prisoner of War Camp, legal secretary, supervisor of MUSC medical transcription pool, and medical transcriptionist for East Cooper Internal Medicine. At age 78, she retired from work but continued for an additional ten years as a volunteer at the Lutheran Hospice. Working and staying involved kept Lou young and young at heart.
Lou was a wonderful mother who leaves behind two sons and four daughters: Patrick H. Wood (Katrina) of Warner Robins, GA, Pamela W. Hesse (Tommy) and Paige W. Gamble (Jim), both of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Priscilla W. Santos (Carroll III) of Elon, NC, Dr. Paula L. Wood of Saluda, NC and Philip L. Wood (Lisa) of St. Marys, GA. She is also survived by ten grandchildren: Joseph R. Wood, Hayden H. O'Brien (Patrick), Lauren E. Hesse, Erin H.Chandler (Landon), W. Wesley Gamble (Ashley), Christopher D. Gamble (Laurie Ann), Carroll A. Santos IV, Emma S. Curtin (Dennis), Taylor S. Wood and Alyssa N. Wood and nine great-grandchildren. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews who were dear to her, and a number of good friends, especially those at the Senior Center, The Palms, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
