Louis Hixon Smith

Louis Hixon Smith, Jr., 91, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, husband of Eleanor Smith died Friday, December 28, 2012. The relatives and friends of Louis Smith are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Sunday, December 30, 2012 in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends following the service at the Chapel.
Mr. Smith was born November 19, 1921 in Charlotte, North Carolina, son of the late Louis Hixon Smith and Annie Ballenger Smith. A graduate of Oak Ridge Military Academy in Oak Ridge, NC, he served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a First Lieutenant. He was a member of Etiwan Masonic Lodge #95 and a former member of the Isle of Palms Exchange Club. He was also a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife Eleanor; his son, COL Louis H. Smith III, USA, Ret., and his wife Dr. Cherry Gaffney of Alexandria, VA; his daughters, Julia S. Shanken and her husband Robert of Loudon, TN; Patricia L. Hoebeek and her husband Capt. Hans E. Hoebeek of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and Elizabeth Anne Conte and her husband Chet of Port Orange, FL; his sister, Mary Elva Caffey of Greensboro, NC; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia Conrad Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made the Alzheimer's Association of South Carolina, 2090 Executive Hall Road, Suite 130, Charleston, SC 29407 or Odyssey Hospice, 5965 Core Avenue, Suite 603, North Charleston, SC 29405. The family appreciates the loving care of the staff at Somerby of Mt. Pleasant and Odyssey Hospice.
