Louis Decimus Rubin, Jr., Ph.D., 89, of Pittsboro, North Carolina, formerly of Charleston, SC, husband of Eva Redfield Rubin, entered into eternal rest Saturday, November 16, 2013. His Funeral Service will be held at the graveside Friday, November 22, 2013 in Kadal Kadosh Beth Elohim Cemetery, Huguenin Avenue at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Louis was born November 19, 1923 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of Louis D. Rubin and Jeanette Rubin. He studied for two years at the College of Charleston before he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He studied Italian at Yale University as part of the Army Specialized Training Program, then worked as a journalist for the base newspaper at Fort Benning. After the war he received a B.A. from the University of Richmond in 1946, and an M.A.and Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University in 1949 and 1954, respectively. He was a member of Kadal Kadosh Beth Elohim. He was a professor of English at Hollins University, in Roanoke, VA, and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and was the co-founder and president of Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill. He was the author or editor of more than 50 books of literary criticism, fiction, and history.
Dr. Rubin is survived by his wife of 62 years of Pittsboro, NC; his two sons: Robert Alden Rubin (Catherine) of Fuquay-Varina, NC and William Louis Rubin of Apex, NC; his brother, Edwin Manning Rubin, of New York, NY; his sister, Joan R. Schoenes, of Richmond, VA; and his two grandchildren: Eva Rubin of Apex, NC and William Rubin of Chapel Hill, NC.
