Louis A. Chaddick

Louis Andrew Chaddick, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mt. Pleasant Chapel from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm. A celebration of Louis’ life will be held afterwards at his home.

Louis, was born on June 7, 1934, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, son of the late Louis Andrew Chaddick, Sr. and Eula Muriel Barrett. Louis graduated from North Charleston High School in 1952, and he still enjoyed lunches and staying in touch with many of his classmates. Louis graduated from Clemson A&M College as a Chemical Engineer in 1956. By the time he was 22, he had lost his mother in 1952 and his father in 1956. He began a 41-year career with Westvāco, where he became an expert in recovery operations, traveling all over the world, including 43 trips to Brazil. He developed the company’s recovery boiler audit program and was instrumental in founding an industry trade association promoting boiler safety. After retirement, he founded Chaddick Consulting and performed training, audits (including the world’s largest recovery boiler in Indonesia) and was an expert witness for boiler issues in the U.S. and Canada. Louis also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves for 35 years, rising to the rank of Captain. He served in many capacities, including Commanding Officer at Base Charleston on weekends. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval War College and the first reservist to be awarded the Coast Guard Commendation Medal. Also, he was a life member of the German Friendly Society.

Louis will be remembered as a lifelong learner, with a big smile and an excellent memory. He was resilient, frugal and had a strong work ethic. He loved family, telling stories, hardcover nonfiction, bird watching, doing the Jumble and crossword puzzles with his sister, and watching Jeopardy. In his prime, he also loved to travel and could build or fix anything.

He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Blair Chaddick Parr (David Boyd); sister, Jean Howe Ansen; grandchildren, Lauren Dumas Schryver (Tim), Boyd and Louis Parr; and great-grandchildren, Maddie and Rosie Schryver. He was preceded in death by his wife, Meta Viohl Chaddick, in 1988; his daughter, Meta Lucille (Babbe) Williams in 2006 and his second wife, Kay Smith Chaddick in 2017. He is also survived by Kay’s children, Jeff Ohman (Mary Jo), Brad and Katherine McCarthy and grandchildren, Eric (Nikki) and Katie Ohman.

The family would like to thank those who helped Louis live independently for more than 5 years following Kay’s death and the wonderful staff at East Cooper Medical Center who provided great care in his final days.
