Lorrie Jelenevsky, age 55 of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina passed away on Saturday at The Hospice Center of Charleston after a long, hard and courageous battle with cancer. Born on September 25th, 1956 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, she is the 4th of 7 children by parents Bernard Martin (USMC - deceased) and Joan Pitman Martin of North Andover Mass. Lorrie is survived by her devoted husband Alex Jelenevsky of Mount Pleasant SC, her cherished children Valerie and Timothy Stiling of Mount Pleasant (both students at USC), step-daughter Nicole Stiling of Lowell, MA, step-children Peter (Barbara) Jelenevsky of Raleigh NC, Michael Jelenevsky of Clayton NC, and Lara (Jack) Hoey of Mt Pleasant SC. Lorrie also leaves her five best friends and sisters Joni Smith (John), Deborah O'Neal (Paul), Wendy DeCoito (Richard), Susan Poulin (David), and Mary Kelleher (Robert), all from the greater-Boston MA area. She was predeceased by her dear brother William ("Billy") Martin in 1988. Lorrie is also survived by many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends throughout South Carolina, New York and Mass who all loved her dearly.
Lorrie spent her formative years in Groveland MA and was a 1974 graduate of Pentucket Regional High School. She was voted the "most outstanding female athlete" in her senior year lettering in field hockey, softball, and co-captaining her "Satchem's" cheerleading squad, while being elected into the student government, and capped with the prom queen title. Lorrie graduated college from Salem State University, earning her B.A. in Education in 1978. After college, Lorrie worked as a successful sales executive for Courier-Citizen of Lowell, MA and GTE-Sylvania in Danvers, MA. After the birth of her 2nd child Tim, Lorrie devoted her life to her children as a proud homemaker, mom, and educational volunteer during her several moves to New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and settled in South Carolina in 2000. Besides her children, Lorrie was passionate about tennis and participated/captained several local ladies & mixed teams from Dunes West and the MtP Rec to local and state championships. She was an active member of the Seacoast Community Church and committed to her faith.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, August 25th, 2012 in the J.HENRY STUHR, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. The family will receive friends from 9am until the time of service, as well as following the Celebration of Life. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made in Lorrie's memory to the Hospice of Charleston Foundation, P.O.Box 417, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29465.
