Starts at 11:00 am (Eastern time)
Lois Laney Porter, 83, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of the late Robert Porter, entered into eternal rest Friday, October 2, 2026. Her Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel.
Lois was born February 10, 1943, in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Ira F. Laney and Gladys G. Laney. A true Lowcountry native, Lois was born and raised in Charleston and remained deeply rooted in the place and people she called home. She was a devoted Christ follower and was married to Robert for 45 years. Lois dedicated more than 30 years of her career to AT&T, where she served as a supervisor before retiring.
Lois was the heartbeat of her family. Strong, sassy, and never afraid to speak her mind, she knew what she wanted and lived her life with purpose. She never took the people or moments she loved for granted. She had a heart for caring for others and would do anything for her family and friends, always making sure everyone was taken care of.
Known affectionately as “Mammie,” Lois was deeply devoted to her family and cherished every opportunity to bring them together. She loved family gatherings, talking about the people she loved, and supporting her family in all of their endeavors. She could often be found in the stands at ball games supporting family members who coached or cheering on her great-grandchildren at their competitions. Her love and encouragement reached every generation of her family.
Lois had a love for the simple pleasures in life. She was an avid Atlanta Braves and Carolina Gamecocks fan, enjoyed crime shows and Court TV, and especially loved decorating for Halloween and the holidays. She loved to shop and had a particular fondness for her Honey Buns, Diet Coke, coffee, and anything sweet. A true foodie, Lois loved good barbecue and ribs, but her family will especially remember her famous red rice with sausage- a dish that was as much a part of family gatherings as she was.
Though life handed Lois a few difficult seasons, she always prevailed. She had a way of leaving an impression on everyone who knew her. She could get onto you quickly, but her family always knew that even her fussing came from a place of love. Her strength, humor, traditions, and countless little expressions became treasured parts of family life. The love she poured into those around her will live on through the stories, traditions, and memories her family carries forward for generations to come.
Lois is survived by her son, Russell Porter; daughters, Kelley Windham (Shane) and Jill Johnson (Dan); her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandchildren, Ashley and Michael; and her brothers, Stuart Laney and Bill Laney.
Memorials may be made in Lois’s memory to the Roper St. Francis Foundation.
