Lois Kramer Jenkins

Lois Metze Jenkins, age 90, entered into eternal rest on July 24, 2018.

Lois Kramer Metze was the daughter of Hugo William Laurence Metze and Irene Osborne Webber Metze born in Charleston on Christmas Eve, 1927.

She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Oliver Hart (Midge) Jenkins and sister, Betty Metze Condon. She is survived by her daughter, Laura Seabrook Jenkins Thompson and husband, Joseph Francis Thompson, Jr.; son, Mark Guerry Jenkins, M.D. and his wife, Kathy Moses Jenkins; three grandchildren, Joseph Jenkins Thompson, M.D.; Anne Jenkins Huntly (Rory), and Andrew Guerry Jenkins (Brianne); two great-grandchildren, Hannah Ray Huntley and Finn Walter Huntly; and one sister, the Rev. Nancy Rene Metze Smith.

Lois grew up in Charleston and was a graduate of Memminger High School. In 1950, she graduated from the College of Charleston with a B. S. in Biology. She worked briefly at The Medical College of S.C. and then went on to pursue a long career that spanned 40 years teaching Charleston youths.

Lois Jenkins taught at the Hebrew Institute, First Baptist, Citadel Square, Nativity, and for the CCSD in the Gifted and Talented Program at Harbor View and Murray Lesesne. Teaching was her greatest passion.

Another passion was gardening. She was a member of the Riverland Terrace Garden Club, the Lawton Bluff Garden Club, and The Garden Club of Charleston. She served on the Boards of each and loved working in her yard and making arrangements for flower shows. She also grafted camelias to form a new variety she named 'Oliver Jenkins'.She was very active in her church, St. James Episcopal, where she sang in the choir for many years. She also served on the Boards of the ECW for St. James and the Diocese of South Carolina. Additionally, she began a lending library of religious books at St. James that she also managed.

Lois was a member of Delta Zeta in college, Delta Kappa Gamma during her teaching career, and a founding member of the James Island Dance Club. She loved playing bridge. She and her sister Betty started a bridge club with their sorority sisters and other friends that met every other week for over 60 years.

The family will receive friends Friday, July 27, 2018 from 6-8 pm at the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC. The funeral will be held Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 2:00 pm at St. James Church, 1872 Camp Road, Charleston, 29412 with internment in the churchyard. A reception at the church will follow.
