Lodema Richardson Adams

July 9, 1956 — September 17, 2018

She loved her family. She loved her friends. She loved France. On September 17, 2018, Lodema Richardson Adams, surrounded by family and friends, and dreaming of France, slipped into eternity after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Her life was too short, but it was a rich and full life. She was a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a wife, and a successful entrepreneur with relentless strength and determination who had a passion for travel.

Lodema was born on July 9, 1956 in Augusta, GA, the third of the four children of Legrand and Nell Richardson. The family moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1959 where Lodema grew up. Lodema attended Whitesides, Moultrie and was a member of the first graduating class of Wando High School in 1974. After high school, she attended Bauder Fashion College in Atlanta and graduated with a degree in interior design. After college, Lodema came back to Charleston and ultimately made Sullivan's Island her permanent home where she raised her family. Over the years, she has had a design business, been a part of the family business, Atlantic Electric Co., Inc. and later started Adams Insurance Co., where she worked throughout her life, ultimately working with her two daughters.

Lodema is predeceased by her husband of 10 years, Stephen D. Adams and her parents, Legrand and Nell Richardson. Lodema is survived by her husband Keith Maxey; her two daughters, Crystal Adams Strickland (Joe Jr.) and Courtney Adams; two grandsons Joseph Strickland III and Boone Strickland. She is also survived by her three siblings: Nancy Shimp (Dale), Lee Richardson (Susan) and Mike Richardson (Kim); step-children, Brandon Maxey, Brittany Maxey and Bryce Maxey; a niece and nephew Kelly and Michael Richardson; as well as numerous cousins. Her friends are too numerous to mention but have always had a special place in her heart.

The family would like to thank all of those who helped with her care during the final weeks of her illness. Your help was invaluable to the family. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston Texas, 72210-4486. www.mdanderson.org/gifts.

A Gathering of Friends will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant from 4 pm to 6 pm. A private memorial ceremony will be held at a later date.
