Lily Sue Walton, beloved wife, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and longtime resident of West Ashley, passed on to her heavenly home on Friday, August 18, 2023. She was 89.
Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at Grace United Methodist Church, 1601 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., followed by interment at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the start of the service. Arrangements are being handled by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.
Sue is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Robert “Bob” Clyde Walton; three children, Robert Jeffrey Walton (Ellen), Susan Walton Glenn (Butch) and Grace Walton Lang (Bob); six grandchildren, Matt Walton (Bonnie), Thomas Walton, Tyler Glenn (Emily), Allie Glenn Van Eaton (Alec), Kyle Lang and Emma Lang; a great-granddaughter, Caroline Hope Walton; two brothers, Robert Myers and David Myers; and many dear in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Sue was preceded in death by her sisters, Barbara Myers Wade and Betty Jo Myers Gee, and great-grandson Connor Walton.
Named after both her grandmothers, Sue was born May 4, 1934, in High Point, N.C., to Robert Willie Myers and Georgia Marie Hardy Myers. As a sophomore at High Point High School in 1949, she met Bob in algebra class – sparking a love story that would last a lifetime. The two dated for eight years before marrying on December 27, 1957. While Bob pursued a career in education, Sue worked secretarial positions at Pilot Life Insurance Company and then at Marietta Paint & Color Company.
In 1967 they moved to Charleston and purchased a home along a railroad spur that would later become the West Ashley Greenway, which proved to be a wonderful location to raise their three kids. Sue returned to the workplace in 1976, taking an administrative position with New York Life Insurance and remaining there until retiring in 1992. Over the next three decades she and Bob traveled as much as they could, visiting nearly every state, England and Israel at least once, and taking family members on multiple ocean cruises. During that period, both also worked part-time for 27 years at the North Charleston Coliseum in a variety of roles and Sue found great joy in chitchatting with event goers.
Sue loved the Lord and lived out her faith by loving others and actively serving her home church, Grace United Methodist, for 56 years. She co-led the church's Inquirers Group for new members from 1974-2003. She loved her family, and her greatest joy was being “all together” with her loved ones. She was an avid walker, reader, and a wonderful southern cook. Through it all she adored Bob, who she could talk to about anything. The two spent countless hours on their front porch reminiscing from their rockers and waving to passersby.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Merrill Gardens at Carolina Park, Wellmore of Daniel Island and Crescent Hospice for all their care and compassion.
Memorial donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 1601 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Charleston, SC 29407, or Alzheimer’s Association, SC Chapter, 2090 Executive Hall Road, Suite 130, Charleston, SC 29407.
