Lewis E. Dudley (Lukie), 84, passed on to be with his Lord Tuesday, November 4, 2014. His Funeral Service will be held Monday, November 10, 2014 in James Island Christian Church, 12 Sawgrass Road, at 10:00 a.m. Interment, Riverview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday at 9:00 a.m. before the service at the church. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Lewis was born August 17, 1930 in Summerville, SC, to the late James J. and Agnes Driggers Dudley. He is of the Baptist faith. Lukie grew up in Charleston around the Hampton Park Playground. He loved children and they loved him. Lukie made friends with other boys, playing and teaching them to play Chinese Checkers and Rook cards. As he grew up he was introduced to Little League Baseball (as a child he was not able to play due to his disabilities); he learned the rules of the game and was hired as an umpire for the Hampton Park Athletic Dept. under Mgr. Lockey Thackery. When he and his mother moved to Mt. Pleasant, he was hired to umpire Little League Baseball for the recreation dept. director Dick Jones. Lukie spent the last 26 years of his life as a patient of the Sandpiper Rehab Center in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
He is survived by two brothers, Francis O. and Joseph Carl Dudley (Barbara); three sisters, Agnes D. Miller (Sidney), Gloria D. Filiberth and Shirley D. Norris (Leonard); sister-in-law Bonnie H. Dudley; and several nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Wilson R., Robert, James H. and Marion T. Dudley; three sisters, Caroline Dudley, Hariette D. Salvo and Inez Weeks; two brothers-in-law, Victor Salvo and Thomas Weeks; and two sisters-in-law Vivan B. Dudley and Irene B. Dudley.
At Lukie's request, in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant Recreation Dept., 391 Egypt Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
