Leslie Townsend Dotterer Jervey

April 18, 1912 — May 11, 2014

Mary Leslie Townsend Dotterer Jervey died on May 11, 2014. Her funeral service will be held in Grace Episcopal Church, 98 Wentworth Street, Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. The family will receive friends following the service in Hanahan Hall, Grace Church. Burial will be held in Johns Island Presbyterian Churchyard at 1:30 pm. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.

She was born in 1912 in the Village of Rockville, the daughter of Julius Charles Townsend and Mai Seabrook Townsend. She was predeceased by her husbands, Edwin Gaillard Dotterer and Charles Heyward Jervey, as well as her four four brothers: Julius Charles Townsend, Jr., Edward Henry Barnwell Townsend, Thomas Seabrook Townsend, and James Swinton Townsend.

She attended grade school in a one-room school on Wadmalaw Island, high school in Hartsville, SC, and attended Winthrop College.

She was a member of The Junior League of Charleston, The Colonial Dames of SC, The Charleston Garden Club, and several other organizations. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. The Dotterer Library (now Chapel) was named in honor of her and her husband. While in her thirties, she created a small ballroom dancing class for young ladies which later became the Downtown Charleston Cotillion for middle school children.

She is survived by her two children: Gaillard Townsend Dotterer (Barbara) of Wadmalaw Island, SC and Leslie Dotterer Rutledge (Donald) of Charleston, SC; as well as five grandchildren: Gaillard Townsend Dotterer, Jr (Retta) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, William Moultrie Dotterer (Betsy) of Richmond, VA, Leslie Rutledge Dickinson (TM) of Charlottesville, VA, Henry Middleton Rutledge, VI (Brandi) of Charleston, SC and Thomas Stafford Graham of Pinopolis, SC; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her surrogate daughter, Eleanor Rice Burns (Ken) of Beaufort, SC.

The family is so grateful to the Bishop Gadsden nurses and staff and Hospice for their loving kindness and continued support.
