Leroy "Roy" Eugene Strickland, Sr., 73, of North Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Dru Strickland, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2014. The relatives and friends of Leroy "Roy" Strickland, Sr. are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Thursday, October 23, 2014 in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens with military honors. The family will receive friends at the Mount Pleasant Chapel on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m with a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m.
Roy was born February 20, 1941 in Lake City, South Carolina, son of the late James Eugene Strickland and the late Juanita Blondell Harrell Strickland. He served in the United States Air Force and the United States Army. He retired from MeadWestvaco as a Lubrication Specialist. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Shriners, Scottish Rite, and Past Master and Life Member of the Hammerton Lodge #332. Roy was a member of the Summerville Shag Club and the East Cooper Shag Club where he loved to dance. He was also a member of Pivots Shag Club and The Beach Music and Shag Preservation Society of South Carolina. One of his greatest joys was taking to the dance floor with his wife, Dru, and shagging the night away. Roy's love for dance was infectious, getting the whole crowd to boogey down to James Brown or shag to Beach music. He was also an avid coon hunter, deer hunter and fisherman. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dru Strickland, of North Charleston, SC; two sons, Roy Strickland and his wife, Tammy, of Summerville, SC and Clay Strickland and his wife, Terri, of Moncks Corner, SC; five grandchildren, Lee Strickland of Summerville, SC, Elizabeth Strickland of Mount Pleasant, SC, Allen Strickland of Summerville, SC, Clay Strickland of Moncks Corner, SC, and Madison Strickland of Moncks Corner, SC; two brothers, Norman Strickland and his wife, Mimi, of Huger, SC and Jimmy Strickland and his wife, Mary, of St. George, SC; one sister, Jeanette Therrell and her husband, Lynwood, Jr., of Goose Creek, SC; brother-in-law, Troy Capps and his wife, Brenda; sisters-in-law, Geneva Harrelson, Claire Capps, Joyce Farmer and her husband, Wayne, and Izzie Brown and her husband, M.C., nephews and nieces, Ken Strickland and his wife, Joanna, Norman Strickland, II and his wife, Sonia, Shane Capps and his wife, Heather, Troy Capps, Timmy Strickland, Stacey Strickland, Angie Boyd, Annette Redmond, James Therrell and his wife, Mandy, Lynnette Stroud and her husband, David, Tommy Therrell, Chuck Brown, Vanessa Friend, Cindy Todd, Jerry Harrelson, Charlene Hucks, Patty Shelley, Catherine Holland, Jennifer Cook, Mary Routon, Jodie Roquemore, and Matt Farmer.
