Leonard Clay Cable Sr., 98, of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Saturday, November 23, 2024. His Funeral Service will be held Friday, November 29, 2024 in the Sullivan's Island Baptist Church, 1753 Central Avenue at 11:00 am. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 9:30 am to 11:00 am in Sullivan's Island Baptist Church. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.
Clay was born in Yellow Creek Township, NC on April 29, 1926, son of the late Eddie Dillard Cable and the late Betty Gladden Hall. After serving in the Army during WWII, Clay completed technical school for welding and mechanics in eastern Tennessee along with course study at Ball State University.
He was employed with Becker Sand and Gravel near Marion, NC, transferred to Camden, SC, and thereafter, ultimately moved permanently to the lowcountry. He held a shop manager position at Van Smith Concrete and branch manager position at Van Lott Equipment Company. He also consulted with Shugert MFG.
His civic service included Isle of Palms Fire Department Chief, City Council, Police Commissioner, and Mayor. He served as the Vice President of the South Carolina Shrimper Association. He was a Deacon at Sullivan's Island Baptist Church. He received the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Dr. James B. Edwards, was a Masonic Noble, and a South Carolina Elector.
He was preceded in death by his wife Martha Dobbins Cable, grandson Alexander Blakeney Shute, stepson Marty Ballentine, brother-in-law Edward Granet, step grandson Dallas Kepler, and two sisters, Jean Ettinger and Joyce Hall.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Morris Ballentine Cable; sister, Barbara Moreno; his daughter, Linda Cable Kepler (Tim), son Leonard (Len) Cable Jr., and step daughter Sydney (Sissy) Ballentine Siikala Emmett; grandson, Preston Maxwell Shute (Bell); sister-in-law, Cheryl Granet; and step-grandchildren, Reilly Wilhelm, Lucas Siikala, Isabel Siikala, Sylvie Siikala, and Penelope Emmett.
