Leon Wolper

Entered into eternal rest on the morning of August 3, 2011, Leon Wolper, husband of Elizabeth "Betsy" Bohannon Kennedy Wolper. Residence, Charleston, SC.  The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Wolper are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 9:00am in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Interment, Brith Sholom Beth Israel, "Maryville".


Mr. Wolper was born October 10, 1923 in Charleston, SC, the son of Jacob and Cecile Barr Wolper.  He attended Crafts Public School and was a graduate of the High School of Charleston. Mr. Wolper served his country with the United States Navy during World War II aboard the Destroyer Richard P. Leary in the Pacific Theatre of operations. He saw action at Saipan-Tinian, Palau, Letye Gulf, Lingayen Gulf, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the Sea Battle of Surigao Strait.  He was an Engineering Technician and former Shipfitter with the Charleston Naval Shipyard. 


Leon was a member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue, also Synagogue Emanu-El and it's Men's Club, Past Master of Walhalla Masonic Lodge #66, AFM (now known as Mariner's Lodge #2 AFM), Scottish Rite Bodies of Ancient Freemasonry, Omar Shrine Temple, Charleston Lions Club, Jewish Community Center and Charleston Elks Lodge #242, Hebrew Benevolent Society, B'Nai B'Rith, Chevra Kadisha (since 1966), Charleston Jewish Federation, American Legion Post # 147, VFW Post #3142, Past Commander of Jewish War Veterans, NARFE and active with the Greater Charleston Bowling Association at Sandpiper and Ashley Lanes.


He is survived by his wife, Betsy of Charleston, SC; one stepdaughter: Deborah Paper of Tempe, Arizona, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews survive him.  He was predeceased by his three brothers: Louis E. Wolper, Isadore Wolper and Moses Wolper; two step-sisters: Pauline Wolper Lynch and Cecile Wolper Lazarus, and step-brother Max Wolper.
