Dr. Leon Rosen, 96, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2018, in Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. Rosen, a life-long Charlestonian, was born on August 4, 1922, and was the son of the late Solomon L. and Annie Blatt Rosen of Charleston, South Carolina. The son of immigrants, Dr. Rosen grew up in Charleston living over the family grocery store, The Star Grocery, on the corner of Race and King Streets. He attended Charleston County public schools, graduating from Charleston High School. He also attended and graduated from the College of Charleston and the Emory University Dental School while serving in the United States Army during World War II. During his military service, Dr. Rosen was in the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) where he trained to become a dentist. Dr. Rosen was also a long-standing member of the Jaycees. He was one of the first dentists to practice in North Charleston, then known as the North Area. His office was on Rivers Avenue near Reynolds Avenue. He later became a respected professor at MUSC School of Dentistry and inspired many others to go into dentistry.

Dr. Rosen was pre-deceased by his brother, Morris D. Rosen, and his sister, Dorothy Rosen Cohen. He is survived by his sister, Marilyn Schwartz (Dave), his nieces and nephews, Sandra Oberman (Marvin), Robert Rosen (Susan), Richard Rosen (Marianne), Debra Rosen (Steven Stephens), Steven Schwartz, and Stuart Schwartz, and his great nieces and nephews, Linda Prager (Adam), Harold Oberman, Annie Rosen (Jonathan Torre), Alexandra Rosen Gourvitch (Daniel), E. William Rosen, John Rosen and Chandler Bold. He is lovingly remembered by his family as a generous and kindly uncle who took a great interest in his family.

The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to Dr. Rosen's long-time caregiver, Hattie Coakley, and nurse, Michelle Graves. Donations to Amedysis Hospice Foundation and Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue in his memory would be appreciated.
