Leilia Furlong Smith, 72, of North Charleston, SC, wife of Harris Coker Smith died Thursday, April 16, 2015. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2015 in the Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, 1106 Fort Drive at 11:00 am. The Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens will be private. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with Rosary at 7:00 pm, in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road.
Leilia was born January 21, 1943 in Charleston, SC, daughter of the late John Besson Furlong and the late Gertrude Marie Carpenter Furlong. After graduating from Bishop England High School in 1961 Leilia went directly into the Sisters of Mercy of Our Lady of Mercy in James Island as a novice. She then attended the School of Nursing at St. Francis Hospital and graduated Palmer Business College. Leilia was a bookkeeper for a Max Polikoff Furniture Company before becoming a certified nursing assistant. Caregiving was Leilia's true calling in life; she always made time to help anyone who needed her help. During her career she worked at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence SC, General Hospital in Rock Hill and at the Ralph H Johnson VA Medical Center and Roper Hospital in Charleston. Leilia was a member of Divine Redeemer Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Harris Smith of North Charleston, SC; children: Mark Smith and his wife Lucy of Ellerslie, GA, Anne Marie Williams and her husband Michael of Richmond, VA; Steven Smith and his wife Kristen of Summerville, SC and Paul Smith and his wife Kristin of Goose Creek, SC; sister, Patricia Groves and her husband William of Hanahan, SC; eight Grandchildren, Ceceilia, David, Mae, Rowen, Megan, Benjamin, Cheyanne and Mercedes. She was preceded in death by a son, David Smith; sister, Margie Francipane; brother, John Furlong; sister, Ruth Neely.
