Lawrence DeWayne Middaugh, beloved father, husband and mentor, passed away on November 2, 2024, at the age of 85. Born on January 6, 1939, in Topeka, Kansas, he dedicated his life to science, conservation, and his family.
As a professional, Larry was an accomplished researcher and mentor in the field of medical research. As a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, he made significant contributions to understanding the impacts of drugs and alcohol on brain development and the neurological mechanisms underpinning addiction. He took joy in mentoring early career professionals, and took an active role in his profession, serving as President of the Neurobehavioral Teratology Society (1987-88) and faculty member in the MUSC Center for Alcohol and Drug Programs.
Outside of his professional life, Larry was an avid runner who completed his final 10K Cooper River Bridge Run as the 1st place winner in the 80+ age group. Larry was also a passionate conservationist and advocate for the preservation of the maritime forest on Sullivan’s Island and served on the Board of the East Cooper Land Trust. Larry loved dogs, and he could be seen walking around the island over the years with Peach, Daryn, Charlie or Max.
Larry is survived by his wife of 62 years, Susan Middaugh, his daughters Gina Binnard and Ellen Middaugh, and his grandchildren, Claire and Wyatt Binnard. He is also remembered fondly by his brother, Ronald Middaugh, and sister-in-law, Diana and his many nieces and nephews.
Larry’s legacy will endure through the many lives he touched.
A celebration of life will be planned later. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Lowcountry Land Trust. 635 Rutledge Ave, Suite 107, Charleston, SC 29403.
