Lawrence Myles Mayland

Lawrence Myles Mayland was born October 8, 1946 in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. An “Air Force Brat,” Larry lived in 6 states, Japan, and Turkey, but he called Montgomery, Alabama home. He graduated from his beloved University of Alabama, and then went immediately to Fort Benning “school for boys.” He met life-long friends in the 8th Infantry Division in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, and then volunteered to serve in Vietnam. There, he was a platoon infantry officer with the 101st Airborne Division, where he met his other life-long friend. Larry received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, and (the only one that meant anything to him) the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He served a total of 21 years in the military, including in the South Carolina National Guard.

Larry married Tina Rutledge Edwards on September 29, 1979 at the First (Scots) Presbyterian church in Charleston. She encouraged him to “get a civilian job,” and he joined ITT Flygt in Atlanta. After 5 years, he joined a manufacturers’ rep firm, and eventually started his own firm, Mayland Southern Pump & Process, which he ran for 22 years. After he sold his company, Larry & Tina retired to Seabrook Island, which he adored.

If asked to describe himself, Larry would say he was a soldier. Ask anyone else to describe him, and they would say he had a quick wit, was smart, thoughtful, and had the kindest heart. He will be greatly missed by his many friends, family, and his beloved cats.

Larry’s visitation will be August 23 from 5:00-7:00 at J Henry Stuhr Inc., 232 Calhoun St. The funeral will be Sunday, August 24 at 2:00 at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting St, immediately followed by graveside service at Magnolia Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Charleston Animal Society, where Larry spent years taking care of kittens, 2455 Remount Rd, North Charleston, SC 29406; or to Hallie Hill, 5604 New Rd, Hollywood, SC 29449.
