Lawrence Paul Kowal

Lawrence Paul Kowal, 60, previously of Hanahan, South Carolina, and recently of Little River, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Friday, August 8, 2025. His Memorial Service will be held Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Calvary Lutheran Church, 1400 Manor Boulevard, Charleston, SC, at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow.

Lawrence was born August 5, 1965, in Washington, District of Columbia, to the late Stanley John Kowal and the late Rose Ann Hurley Kowal. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland in 1990 and a Master of Business Administration from Emory University in 2007. He joined the Coast Guard and served as a Marine Safety Officer in New Orleans, LA, from 1992 to 1995. For most of his career, he worked in health, safety and environmental management for the chemical industry and retired in January from Lanxess Chemical Company in Charleston. His career allowed him to travel to many places in Europe and Asia.

Lawrence loved spending time with his family, working on home projects, traveling, and going to the beach. He believed in helping other people and participated in many charities throughout his life, such as Habitat for Humanity and The United Way, and was an active member of his church.

Lawrence is survived by his wife Amanda Mailhes Kowal; son, Brandon A. Kowal; daughter, Serena N. Kowal; brothers Stanley Kowal (Theresa), Thomas Kowal (Christine), and James Kowal (Pam); his sisters Theresa Kowal, Jeanie Kowal Hetrick (Randy); Patricia Kowal Arias (Gabe), Christina Kowal McHale (Dennis), and Grace Kowal Mitchell (Joel); sister-in-law Linda Mailhes Salminen (Rev. Jon); and brother-in-law Dean Mailhes (Karen) and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Mary Kowal; mother-in-law Jean Mailhes and father-in-law John Mailhes.

Memorials are appreciated and may be given to Trident United Way or the American Cancer Society.
