Lawrence Francis Cook

Lawrence Francis Cook, Sr., 86, of Goose Creek, SC, died Wednesday, October 13, 2010, in a local hospital.


Born March 30, 1924 in Luray, SC, he was the son of Charlie Cook and Maybell Varnadore Cook. He married the former Queenie Vermel Browder in July 12, 1946 and together they raised a family of four sons. Mr. Cook coached baseball in Hanahan in the 1960s and the family later moved to Goose Creek. Mr. Cook was a Digester Operator at Westvaco for more than 30 years. During retirement he became an active member of the Carolina Masonic Lodge 375, and a Knights Templar. He was Treasurer Emeritus of Hillbilly Clan #82 and a member of the Omar Shrine. His volunteer work helping children brought him great joy; together with his son, they transported children from the Charleston area to the Shriners Hospital in Greenville, SC for treatment. He also enjoyed working in his vegetable garden.   


Mr. Cook is survived by his wife of 64 years, Queenie Cook of Goose Creek, SC; sons, Lawrence Francis Cook, Jr. of Saltillo, MS and Wayne Cook and his wife Wanda of Goose Creek, SC; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Henry Walter Sword and his wife Marvine of Bedford, TX and Lewis P. Sword and his wife Kay of Emory, TX.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Larry Tyrone Cook and Claude Raymond Cook; three brothers:  Charlie, Claude and Rufus Cook; and one sister, Frances Murray.


The memorial service will be held in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road, Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 12:00 Noon. 


Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Burned and Crippled Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
