Laurita Marie Meter, 101, of Hanahan, SC, entered into eternal rest Sunday, January 3, 2021.
Laurita was born April 25, 1919 in Dansville, NY, daughter of James A Kinney and Julia Didas Kinney. A 1937 graduate of Dansville Central High School. During World War II she worked at Ritter Corporation in Rochester. She was an accomplished equestrian and loved to go to Lake Conesus on her trips home. She and her husband were in the same high school class but remained single until meeting 12 years later at a social gathering, a weekend that Air Force pilot 1st Lt. Charles Meter flew a bomber into Dansville Municipal Airport from Montgomery AL. He was not sure he recognized her and asked a friend, 'Who is that good looking woman?'. She married Charlie in 1950, started a family in Montgomery AL (first child Bob), followed by military transfers to Merced CA (2nd and 3rd children, Linda, and Ricky), Orlando FL, and Saint-Remy-sur-Avre in Normandy France from 1961 to 1963 near the US Air Bases at Evreux and Dreux. While there she travelled throughout Europe with her family. In 1964 she settled in Hanahan SC where she remained with her husband for 52 years until his passing in 2016, then moved to be close to her daughter in Greensboro, NC.
She lived to love and care for her family and was fearless in her wisdom. She would say - Life is not easy and no one always knows the best thing to do, but you do the best you can at the time and go forward, because "That's Life". She often told her children she would always be with them, "forever and ever".
She is preceded by her husband of 66 years, Maj Charles Henry Meter USAF. She is survived by two sons; Robert E Meter (Karen) of Parker CO, Richard A. Meter (Patricia) of Vass NC; daughter, Linda A. Englar (John) of Greensboro NC; five grandchildren, James A. Meter, Paul C. Meter, Kevin M. Englar, Scott M. Englar, and Brian M. Englar.
She was a member of the Divine Redeemer Catholic Church in Hanahan. A Mass will be commemorated to her memory at her daughter's parish at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Greensboro, NC. Her graveside service will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road.
