Laurie S. McGill

September 18, 1979 — August 22, 2013

On August 22, 2013, Laurie S. McGill, 33, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, lost her 20-year struggle with lupus. She knew from her teenage years that she was not destined for longevity and tried to fit as much as she could into her shortened lifespan. A private Celebration of Laurie's Life will be held at the beach which Laurie loved. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.

Laurie was born September 18, 1979 in Bangor, Maine. She graduated from Bangor High School with honors and went on to Reed College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English - despite losing a year to her illness. After seeking employment in her major for the better part of a year, she returned to The University of Maine to pursue prerequisites for nursing and then graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After several additional years of graduate work in psychiatric nursing, she pursued her passion as a psychiatric nurse, working in Portland, OR until she became disabled with her disease.

She returned to Charleston, SC to be cared for by her mother and, in the last year of her life, although limited by her disabilities, pursued her other passions of cooking and working in her vegetable garden, sandwiched between numerous medical appointments and procedures.

Surviving Laurie are her mother, Lynda R. McGill of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and her father, Dr. John R. McGill and his wife, Marge, of Bangor, ME; her brother, Tim McGill, and his fiancee, Meghan of Asheville, NC; and a loving extended family of cousins, step-sisters, aunts and uncles, and her special friends, Bill and Sam.

The family wishes to thank all of those medical professionals who have helped Laurie with her care throughout the years of her struggle with lupus.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in Laurie's name to the Lupus Foundation, 1911 Barnwell Street, Columbia, SC 29201 or the National Kidney Foundation of South Carolina, 508 Hampton Street, Suite 206, Columbia, SC 29201.
