Larry Douglas Amick died Monday, March 11, 2024 in Mt. Pleasant SC. He was born January 6, 1941 in Columbia, SC to the late W.O. and Mary Sue Amick. He attended public schools in Columbia and graduated in 1959 from Dreher High School. He attended the University of South Carolina and graduated in 1964 with a B. S. in Pharmacy. His professional life included retail pharmacy ownership in Greenwood, SC and at the Isle of Palms. He retired in 2007 from CVS.
His personal life included an memorable, idyllic childhood with many friends and neighbors in the Shandon area of Columbia. He was baptized, confirmed and married in Incarnation Lutheran Church, Columbia by his Pastor, the Reverend George Meetze. He married his high school sweetheart, Cynthia Hoover in 1963. They moved to Greenwood, SC in 1964 where he was welcomed into a family Pharmacy by Oscar Parrish. He later joined in the ownership of Parrish Pharmacy until 1992. At that time, he opened Island Pharmacy on the Isle of Palms and ran it until going to work for CVS. After retiring he continued his career as a Pharmacist Consultant with DCI of Charleston and as a volunteer pharmacist at Harvest Free Medical Clinic. He also volunteered at Neighbors Together in North Charleston. His professional memberships included, the SC Pharmaceutical Association, Lowcountry Pharmaceutical Association, and the 5th District Pharmaceutical Association, where he served as both Vice President and President.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Cynthia Anne; daughter, Kimberly Chesson (Gary) of Charlotte, NC and son, Dr. Grayson Amick (Charlotte) of Chapin, SC; five grandchildren, Madison, Emma, and Grayson Chesson and Caroline and Daniel Amick (Madeline); one great grandchild, Laurie Amick; two sisters, Mary Sykes and Marie Hutchison of Irmo, SC; and nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Bill Amick.
Larry's greatest joy was his children and grandchildren. He was very proud of all of them and loved spending time with them, watching them grow up and hearing of their adventures and travels. He was a lifelong Lutheran and presently a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran, Charleston. He was an active member having served on the Congregation Council, as an usher, member of XYZ's and offering counter and volunteer.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024 at St, Matthew's Lutheran Church, 405 King Street, Charleston, SC at 11:00 am. Inurnment will be private. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel.
