Kruger Belmont Smith, 92, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, beloved husband of June Boykin Doig Smith, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, July 9, 2026.

A visitation will be held Saturday, July 18, 2026, beginning at 3:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 4:00 p.m. at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road.

Interment with military honors will follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Born September 29, 1933, in Charleston, South Carolina, Kruger was the son of the late Perry Belmont Smith and Mary Wrede Smith. A Charleston County native, he graduated from Charleston High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska and the University of Colorado, respectively. He proudly served 24 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

After his military career, Kruger dedicated 27 years to the Mount Pleasant Town Council, serving as longtime Mayor Pro Tem and Acting Mayor in 2009. He chaired numerous committees, represented the town on CARTA, and was widely respected for his integrity, thoughtful leadership, and commitment to responsible growth. In recognition of his decades of service, the Visitors Center at Memorial Waterfront Park was named the Kruger B. Smith Building.

Beyond public office, Kruger was active in the Elks Lodge 242, Mount Pleasant Sertoma Club, 88 Club, Washington Light Infantry, the Charleston Speech and Hearing Center, the East Cooper Area Council, and All Saint’s Lutheran Church.

He will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his country, and the community he faithfully served.

He is survived by his children, Robin S. Googe of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Kruger Smith, Jr. (Tracy Smith) of Chattanooga, TN; his grandchildren, Madison Smith (John McDonough) of Huntsville, Alabama, and Jace Smith of Chattanooga, TN; and his great-granddaughter, Hayleigh Morgan of Mount Pleasant, SC.
