She was born in Charleston on June 1, 1931, the daughter of the late, Paul John Craven, Sr. and Thayer Burk Craven. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Her lifelong Christian beliefs left a legacy with her family and an impression on all who knew her. She will be greatly missed. Mrs. Whaley was a graduate of St. Andrews High School and she attended Furman University on an academic scholarship. She was employed by Charleston Memorial Emergency Room, Public Savings and Loan and Dr. Charlton DeSaussure. She was a faithful housewife and mother. She loved gardening, bird-watching, singing, listening to the Bible Broadcasting Network, and playing games with her grandchildren. She was a sixth generation member of The First Baptist Church of Charleston. In earlier years, she was an active member and enjoyed teaching Sunday School and singing alto in the church choir As health allowed, she took her oldest grandson to church and then later in life enjoyed being taken when possible to worship with her beloved church family.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of sixty years, Hubert James Whaley "Jimmy" of Charleston. Other survivors include her two daughters, Kathryn Whaley Allgren of Charleston and Thayer Whaley Arredondo and husband Victor of Charleston; three grandchildren, James Theron Whaley, Jr., Grace Kathryn Arredondo, and Victor Burk Arredondo; two brothers, Dr. Paul John Craven, Jr. and his wife Joye of Atlanta, GA, Judge Julian William Craven and his wife Maryjane of Harleyville, SC; ten nieces and one nephew; and cousins who were all dear to her heart. She was preceded in death by her son, James Theron Whaley, Sr.
