Kathleen Kimmel Young died in Charleston, SC on August 28, 2026.

The daughter of Louisa Johnson Waring and William Tweed Kimmel, she was born in Louisville, Kentucky on July 15 ,1947. She was the granddaughter of Louisa Anna Johnson Waring and Simons Vander-Horst Waring

Kathleen attended the Collegiate School in Louisville, graduated from The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York, and Bennett College in Millbrook, New York. Thereafter she attended The Alliance Francaise in Paris.

She married Joseph Rutledge Young, Jr, a Charleston lawyer, on August 10, 1968. They have two sons, Joseph Rutledge Young III (Molly) and Simons Waring Young (Sarah) and 5 grandchildren: Caroline Stuart Young, Anne Middleton Young, Henry Rutledge Young, Benjamin Rutledge Young and William Porter Young.

She is survived by her husband, sons and daughters in law, and all her grandchildren, as well as her sisters Louisa Kimmel Blodgett, Frances Moore Scholtz, Helen Johnson Moore, and Amy Moore Powers.

A member of St. Michael’s Church, The Junior League of Charleston, The Preservation Society, The Charleston Library Society, and The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America, Kathleen was an interior decorator and King Street antiques and accessories shop owner for many years. Her design company was KATHLEEN YOUNG INTERIORS and her shops were Circa, 179 ½ King St. and 152 AD.

A service of burial will be held at St Michael’s Church on Meeting Street on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at 1:00 pm followed by burial at Magnolia Cemetery and a reception at the Carolina Yacht Club.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kathleen’s memory to St Michaels’ Church or a charity of your choosing.
