Katherine Smith Powell

October 23, 1913 — December 31, 2010

Entered into eternal rest on the evening of December 31, 2010, Katherine Smith Powell, widow of Lofton Powell. Residence, North Charleston, South Carolina. 


The relatives and friends of Mrs. Katherine S. Powell are invited to attend her funeral service at Ferndale Baptist Church, 4870 Piedmont Avenue, N. Charleston on Monday, January 3, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to church.

Mrs. Powell was born on October 23, 1913 in Reevesville, SC. She was the daughter of Arthur Wesley Smith and Molly Rosetta Kinsey Smith. She was an owner and operator of the Ways Inn Motel in Santee, SC. Katherine joined Ferndale Baptist Church in 1982. She was the oldest living member and a very faithful member. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She will be missed by all.


She is survived by her grandson: Manning Westbury; five great-grandchildren: Timothy Price Walter, Jr., Cooper Westbury Walter, Jason Westbury, Marlon Westbury and Sean Westbury; a nephew: Paul L. Byrd; grandson-in-law: Timothy Price Walter, Sr. and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Way Squires; granddaughter, Katherine Darlene Westbury Walter; two brothers: Clifton Smith and O'dell Smith and two sisters: Mertice Swain and Lavurn Byrd.
