Katherine Keenan Sheridan Mulherin, beloved wife of the late Charles McLaughlin Mulherin, Jr., passed away Monday, May 21. Born September 13, 1943 in Augusta, GA, Kay was the daughter of William Gerald Sheridan and Miriam Henderson Dinkins. After graduating from North Augusta High School, Kay attended Augusta College and graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia with a BA in English and French. While at Georgia, Kay met her best friend and the love her life, affectionately known as "Bro". Kay and Bro were married August 14, 1965 in Augusta and eventually settled in Charleston where they were active in their church and community. Their greatest joy was raising their two daughters and supporting their activities. Their home was always open to their family, friends and friends of their children.
After Bro's death in 1993, Kay continued as the librarian at Charleston Day School a position she held for thirty years. Born a natural teacher, she nurtured the love of books to her students.
Kay will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, compassionate steadfast friend, gifted educator, and adoring grandmother to Chad and Will.
She is survived by two daughters Katherine Michele Mulherin and Laurin Woods Mulherin Shealy (Cary); two grandsons Charles Randall Shealy and William Mulherin Shealy all of Charleston; two sisters Martha S. Tolbert (Thomas) of Atlanta, GA and Claire S. Walters (Raymond) of Augusta, GA; two brothers Richard Brinsley Sheridan III of Garden City Beach, SC and William Gerald Sheridan, Jr. of Melbourne, FL; sister-in-law Brenda J. Sheridan of Simpsonville, SC; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Robert Gerald Sheridan, Jonathan Lewis Sheridan, William Brannon Walters, Richard Sheridan Walters, William Townsend Barron III, Mark Slay Barron and Kevin Randall Shealy.
The family will receive friends Thursday at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, May 25, 2012 at John Wesley United Methodist Church at 10:30 with the Reverend T. Reginald Thaxton and Reverend Laura Canine officiating. The burial will be at Westover Cemetery, Augusta, Ga Friday afternoon at 4:00. Visitation will follow at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond L. Walters, Jr.
