Kate Pinchuk Klein,100, of Charleston, SC, passed away on the evening of July 8, 2010. Kate was born in Klesov, Ukraine, Russia (formerly Poland) on May 1, 1910. Daughter of Abraham and Rebecca Feiglestein Pinchuk, she was the oldest of three brothers and one sister.
Relatives and friends attended her funeral services Friday, July 9, 2010 at four o'clock in Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery, "Maryville"
Kate immigrated to the United States in 1921 at the age of 11. Kate was literate in Russian, Polish, Yiddish and Hebrew. Within a single year of living in America, she learned to speak English fluently with no foreign accent. She was the first Pinchuk to graduate high school and furthered her education attending business school. She put her skills to use as a buyer for Gimbel's Department Store in Manhattan, N.Y.
The single most important event of her life was meeting her future husband, Louis Klein, at age 11. They were lifelong sweethearts and married four days after Louis graduated from Pharmacy College. Kate was a licensed N.Y. Pharmacy Apprentice and worked alongside her husband owning and operating their own pharmacy.
Most remarkable of all, Kate was a phenomenal mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Kate was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Louis, two brothers and one sister. She is survived by two daughters, Carol Newmark (Paul) of Rancho, CA and Brenda Rosen (Sam) of Charleston, SC; a son, Dr. Jed Klein (Jan) of Ft. Myers, FL; nine grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren whose lives she touched and enriched with her love and devotion.
