Julien Theodore Melchers, Jr. (Ted) went home to be with Christ on May 27, 2018 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Deedie and is survived by his daughter, Fay Melchers Goodnight and her husband, Dee of Roswell, GA; daughter Julie Melchers Wilson, and her husband Rev. Alan Wilson of Mount Pleasant, SC; son Dr. Julien Theodore Melchers III and his wife Cindy Copeland of Mount Pleasant; and son Joseph M. Melchers and his wife, Kathy Hankins of Lexington, SC; 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Ted was born in Charleston, SC April 7, 1923. He grew up on Mount Pleasant on the banks of Shem Creek and attended Boy's High in Charleston. He was a graduating member of the first class of General William Moultrie High School. Soon thereafter, he left for Clemson and joined the Corps of Cadets until he volunteered for the Army Air Corps during his Sophomore year. Mid-war, on a 10-day leave, he married his childhood sweetheart, Miss Ada Frances "Deedie" Edwards in 1943 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. He was later stationed in Saipan until returning home in 1946. He returned to Clemson and earned his degree in Electrical Engineering and later earned his Professional Engineer. He worked for Westinghouse in Birmingham, AL and later in Atlanta, GA. He came to faith in Christ under the ministry of Frank Barker of Briarwood Presbyterian Church while in Birmingham and later served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church of America. He and Deedie returned home to Mount Pleasant in 1995 where he faithfully attended East Cooper Baptist Church ever since. This Southern gentleman exuded pleasantness and was a godly husband, father and avid outdoorsman with a love of the Lowcountry (there was no limit to how many oysters he could eat!). He was always generous with his resources, time and his exceptional skills in helping others. He led his family with quiet dignity and a strong work ethic and his love for Christ was deep as he "walked humbly with his God." He was revered by all who knew him and was everyone's answer man on almost any subject and could fix anything! He will be missed greatly by those who remain, but we rejoice that He is worshipping Jesus Christ with full strength and joy. His Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2018 in East Cooper Baptist Church, 361 Egypt Road at 11:00 am. Interment with military honors will follow in Christ Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 until 11:00 am in East Cooper Baptist Church. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to East Cooper Baptist Church, 361 Egypt Road, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464.
