Dr. Julie Lipovsky was born on October 17, 1959 in New City, New York and passed away in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina on July 1, 2026. She was an avid athlete throughout her life. Julie earned her Masters and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology at the University of Florida. Her time in Gainesville started her road to being a Gators fan and she was a very big fan throughout her life.

Julie joined the faculty in the Psychiatry Department at the Medical University of South Carolina where she taught many Psychology interns and post-doctoral fellows how to treat children who had experienced traumatic events. She is a published author of many scientific articles.

Julie joined the Psychology faculty at the Citadel where she worked until retirement. She served as Assistant Provost for Diversity Initiatives and in this role she greatly advanced opportunities for women and minorities on campus. She was the founding Director of the Clinical Counseling program at the Citadel and in this role she helped shape the landscape of mental health services across greater Charleston. The Clinical Counseling program is one of the most successful and rigorous graduate programs at the Citadel.

One of Julie’s favorite awards was the prestigious Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. award sponsored by the Black History Intercollegiate Consortium. The dream of Martin Luther King, Jr. lives on through Julie’s efforts to ensure that equality and justice prevail.

Outside of her academic life, Julie was founder of Lowcountry Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (LEAP). Through horses, Julie and others provided treatment to children and adults who did not benefit from conventional therapies.

In addition to her many accomplishments, Julie leaves everyone who meets her with a huge impression. She is opinionated, strong willed, and has a very dry sense of humor. She was a member of Food and Books (FAB), a much loved book club for more than 30 years. In addition, for years she went to the barn every Sunday morning to ride her beloved horse, Sugar. A highly appreciated role at the barn was that Julie served as a skilled and dedicated barn mucker.

Julie is survived by her husband, Mark, her sister, Suzy, niece Jodi, nephew Jake, close cousins Jill, Peter, Hank, Adam, and Jena, and many friends who are considered family. Julie leaves a vast legacy through her collaborations with colleagues and knowledge shared with former students and mentees and the lives changed of many people due to Julie’s good works. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
