Julie Anne Avery passed away peacefully on April 25, 2018, at Seabrook Island, South Carolina. Julie is the daughter of the late James C. and Ruth Dantzler of North Charleston, SC.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, Capt. Robert Avery USN (Retired), son Scott Avery (daughter-in-law Kimberly, granddaughter Nora Beth) of Stone Mountain, GA, daughter Allison Petrilla and son-in-law Eric of Alexandria, VA, son Brian Avery of Chapel Hill, NC, sister Claire Christie of Greenville, SC (husband Dan, children Matt, Victoria, and Timothy), and her aunt Margaret Smith (husband Buddy) and many cousins and close friends.
She grew up in North Charleston attending the North Charleston High School (Class of 1962) where she was co-editor of the school yearbook. She graduated from Columbia College with a degree in Education and later received a Master of Education degree from the Citadel. She was a tough as nails Navy wife for 30 years and taught elementary reading in four states before retiring to Chapel Hill, NC and Seabrook Island, SC.
She was a devoted and nurturing mother to her children, guiding them through education, scouting, swimming and many other activities. She remained close with her North Charleston friends and classmates over the years and developed many new ones at each of the many places where her family lived. Her loves included spending time with her family, reading a good book, gardening, spending time on Seabrook Island, listening to Carolina beach music and enjoying low country cuisine.
A memorial service will be held for family and friends at North Charleston United Methodist Church on May 4, 2018 at 11:00 AM. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL.
