Entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of Sunday, February 19, 2012, Julia Porter Cart Smith, 91, of Charleston, SC. She was predeceased in 2004 by her loving husband of 62 years, Col. Samuel Winslow Smith, USMC, Ret., of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
Born and raised in Charleston, SC, May 31, 1920, she was the daughter of William Porter Cart and Hermine Otis Leiding Cart of Charleston. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority at the College of Charleston.
Porter Cart Smith is survived and dearly missed by her beloved friend and fiancé, Charles H. Drayton, Charleston, SC. Her children: Samuel Winslow Smith, Jr. of Bariloche, Argentina; Julia Smith Cart of Charleston, SC; Leighton Smith Holmes of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her grandchildren: Adam Kendrick Smith of Seattle, Washington; Megan Campbell Smith of San Francisco, California and Alexa Smith Keefe of Washington, D.C. Her great grandchildren: Josephine Julia Keefe - Lemaher of Washington, D.C.; Leo Arthur Smith of Seattle, Washington. Also by her sister, Elise Cart Robertson, 102, of Charleston, SC; brother: William Porter Cart Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
After 22 years of military life as the devoted and brave wife of a career U.S. Marine officer, she moved with her husband Sam to Summerville, SC upon his retirement in 1978. In 1999 they moved to Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community where they enjoyed their final years in the company of so many wonderful friends and family.
A brilliant bridge player, hostess and founder of the Martini Girls, Porter Cart Smith will be long remembered as the classic example of a fine Southern lady: full of strength and courage, grace and warmth, and especially as a fine storyteller with a spicy sense of humor.
The relatives and friends of Porter Smith, and the staff at Bishop Gadsden are invited to celebrate her life at the memorial service to be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at 2 P.M. in the Chapel at Bishop Gadsden. Inurnment at Grace Episcopal Church by the Rev. Paul Gilbert, to be attended by immediate family only.
