Judy Deal Birdsong Moore, wife of Wesley L Moore III, passed away peacefully on Mother's Day at her home on Folly Beach. A visitation will be held in J. Henry Sturh's, Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC on Thursday, May 18, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
The daughter of Ralph Harrison and Emily Deal Birdsong, Judy was born on June 1, 1954 in Atlanta, Georgia. After Judy's mother's death, her father married Dorothy Cabaniss Wyrick Birdsong, whose sons Pete and Mike joined Judy and her sister Becky to form a harmonious blended family.
After graduating with honors from Briarcliff High School and Presbyterian College, Judy earned an MA in Community Education at the University of South Carolina where she met her future husband Wesley. The two married on February 4th, 1978.
Judy taught psychology and served as the coordinator of the Psychology Department at Trident Technical College until the birth of her first son Harrison in 1984. Over the course of the next decade, she stayed home to rear Harrison and his younger brother Ned. Once the boys entered school, she worked for a time as a kindergarten assistant at Sullivans Island Elementary School. Subsequently, she acquired an MA and EdS in school psychology. A nationally certified school psychologist, she specialized in preschoolers with developmental delays and, despite her illness, worked for Berkeley County schools right up until the end.
Throughout her working life, whether she was delivering a lecture on Freud, helping a kindergartener construct a Valentine's Day card, or evaluating a three-year-old with speech delays, Judy performed her duties with the utmost conscientiousness. She was a modest, gentle soul with a dry, sometimes ironic sense of humor. A loving wife, mother, and mother-in-law, she lived a life distinguished by integrity and left this world bravely, without a particle of self-pity. She enjoyed reading, travel, and the outdoors, especially kayaking in and around the Folly River. She will live on the memories of so many --friends, families, and students.
In addition to her husband Wesley and sons Harrison (Taryn) and Ned, Judy is survived by her sister Becky Birdsong Hudson (Dave) and her brothers Pete Birdsong (Linda) and Mike Birdsong (Patti). Other survivors include her brother-in-laws David (Nancy), Fleming (Amy), and sister-in-law, Sue Ellen (Dwayne), and a host of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 3 International Dr. Suite 200, Rye Brook, NY 10573.
