Judith Mendell Solomon

August 2, 1925 — November 18, 2011

Beloved matriarch of the Solomon Family, Judith Mendell Solomon departed this life peacefully Friday, November 18, 2011. At the time of her passing, she was 86 years old. Judy was born in Philadelphia on August 2, 1925. As the loving wife of Melvin Solomon, Judy brought her charisma and unique style to Charleston in 1947. Her playful spirit was ever-present whether she was playing mahjong with her friends, teaching her grandchildren to read, or sharing her famous romantic stories of worldly travels. Her kindness, loyalty, confidence and compassion set an example for four generations of Charlestonians to follow in her footsteps. She leaves a legacy of philanthropy, devotion to her family and profound appreciation for the Arts.

Judy was the first Lion of Judah of the Charleston Jewish Federation and a past president of Hadassah. Judy and Melvin were honored for their charitable support of education, Judaism and civic causes with numerous awards including the BSBI 2010 Humanitarian Award for the Arts, the 2002 AFP Lowcountry Philanthropy award and honored by institutions as diverse as the Shaare Zedek Hospital in Israel, the Orthodox Union in New York City, Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue and the Cardinal Cushing School for Exceptional Children of All Faiths.

She is survived by her children, Cheryl (& Edward) Dauber, Robin Solomon, Heidi (& Barry) Allen and Zachary (& Susan) Solomon; her grandchildren, Jeremy (& Miri) Dauber, Gabriel (& Elisa) Bluestein, Noah Dauber, Andrew (& Sara) Dauber, Jessica (& Eduardo) Lucena, Rebecca Leibowitz, Abigail (& Joseph) Pearson, Alexander, Benjamin, and Jonathan Solomon, Eddy Allen, and her six great-grandchildren.
