Judith Brasfield Johnson, a beloved and cherished family member, passed away peacefully at her home in Lynchburg, Virginia, on October 7, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on August 19, 1941, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Judith's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with compassion, dedication, and love.
Education was of utmost importance to Judith, who earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from Emory University. This achievement not only marked a significant milestone in her personal journey but also laid the foundation for her esteemed career dedicated to the healing arts. Judith devoted herself to the nursing profession, serving as the head of the LPN nursing program in Camden, South Carolina. Her commitment to healthcare transcended the classroom, shaping the lives of countless students.
She was an active member at All Saints Reformed Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, Va. until her health declined and she was no longer able to attend. She was a faithful woman who devoted her life to God.
Beyond her professional life, Judith found joy in the moments spent with her family, particularly at their cherished mountain house in Cashiers, North Carolina. It was here amidst the towering trees and tranquil views that memories were crafted, laughter shared, and love celebrated. Judith could also be found at the Greenbrier enjoying a cosmo and playing the slot machines.
Judith’s hobbies reflected her creative spirit; she flourished in knitting, cross-stitching, and needlework. Travel was another passion of hers, especially her trips to Cancun, Mexico, where the sun and sea brought her immense joy. She also delighted in horseback riding.
She is survived by her two daughters, Dr. Stephanie Kirsten Sullivan (Dr. Robert Andersen Sullivan, Jr.) and Jessica Ann Peterson (Arthur F. Peterson, Jr.). Judith also leaves behind her brother-in-law, Russell Johnson, and her loyal feline companion, Rosie, who remained by her side through it all.
Judith was a proud grandmother, relishing in the blessings of her grandchildren, Dr. Matilda Daus Sullivan, who is engaged to Dr. William Hunter Hewlett, Benjamin Chalkey Sullivan, and Anna Claire Peterson. Her deep love for her family was mirrored in every story shared, every hug given, and every lesson imparted. Judith’s presence will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered in their hearts.
Judith was predeceased by her husband, Donald Porter Johnson; her father, Roy Leonard Brasfield; and her mother, Jewell Jackson Brasfield.
As we reflect on the life of Judith Brasfield Johnson, we celebrate a woman whose passion for nursing, dedication to her family, and spirit for life left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her legacy continue to inspire love and compassion in our hearts.
The family would like to sincerely thank all the caregivers at TheKey. A special appreciation goes to Cherie Toler, who served as Judith’s primary caregiver. Cherie became a special part of the family and someone Judith considered to be a dear friend.
