Entered into eternal rest on the morning of April 15, 2012, Juanita Greene Chassereau, widow of William Dodd Chassereau. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel at Citadel Square Baptist Church. Interment, Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Nita was born in Portal, GA on November 22, 1921 to Charlie Hampton Greene of Pulaski, GA and Clara H. Johnson of Portal, GA. She was the sixth of seven children. Her siblings were Thompsie Lee, Elwood, Ruth, Dorothy, Mildred, and Clara. In 1932 the family moved to Charleston, where her father owned and ran a neighborhood grocery store.
Nita met her husband, William Dodd Chassereau (Billy), at the Folly Beach Pier. They married on August 27, 1938 and had two children, William Dodd Chassereau, Jr., and Carolyn Ann Chassereau Warlick. In the early years of her marriage, Nita worked as a window stylist for W. T. Grant on King Street, and later as a cafeteria manager for the Charleston County School District. She was a former member of Cooper River Baptist Church, and an active member of Citadel Square Baptist Church, where she was involved in her Sunday School Class and enjoyed singing with the Joy Group.
Her friends and family knew her as wonderful cook, and enjoyed her lively spirit and infectious laughter. She liked being with her large family during reunions at the beach. She had great style, was an impeccable dresser, and took great care in her appearance.
Juanita was preceded in death by her husband William, and is survived by her son, Dodd and his wife Ann of Nashville, her daughter Carolyn and husband Bill of Charleston, and her close companion Charles A. Gilliam. She has four grandchildren, Jordan Warlick Gilbert and her husband David, Joshua Dodd Warlick and his wife Elizabeth, Cynthia Chassereau Wallace and her husband Guy, and Christy Chassereau Bryan and her husband Andrew. She also has five great grandchildren, Rayna and Chloe Gilbert, Guy and Luke Wallace, and Orion Warlick.
