Elise Joye Jenkins Chambers, 88, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of Henry C. Chambers entered into eternal rest Thursday, September 21, 2017. Her Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, September 26, 2017 in St. Michael's Church, 71 Broad Street at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends Tuesday in the church Parish Hall immediately following the service until 1:00 p.m. Interment, Trinity Episcopal Churchyard, Edisto Island at 2:15 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Joye was born May 7, 1929 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Arthur Joye Jenkins and Elise Macmurphy Cart Jenkins Byrd Robertson. She attended Winthrop University and was a member of St. Michael's Church. Joye loved spending time at her family summer home, Brickhouse Plantation on Edisto Island. She was an avid golfer and a faithful member of the Country Club of Charleston. She was a member of The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the state of South Carolina. Joye also enjoyed painting, dancing and being on the water.
Joye is survived by her husband, Henry; son, Henry L.P. Smith, Jr. (Sheri) of Ehrhardt, SC; two grandsons: H.L.P. "Laddie" Smith III and Whitemarsh "Whit" Seabrook Smith, II; three step-grandchildren: Maggie E. Seigler, Cody E. Seigler and Jared S. Seigler; brother, Arthur "Skipper" Joye Jenkins (Sarah Ann) of Charleston, SC; sister-in-law, Elizabeth "Bet" B. Byrd; uncle, William P. Cart, Jr. and six step-children. She was predeceased by her husband Henry L. P. Smith and her second husband Cambridge M. Trott; two daughters: Joye Jenkins Smith Jordan and Elise Seabrook Smith; and brother, Rev. Ralph M. Byrd, Jr.
