Mary Louise Josephine O’Sullivan Munster known to all as “Joy”

June 23, 2026 marked the passing of Mary Louise Josephine O’Sullivan Munster, but you probably knew her as “Joy.” Or Mommy, or Grandma, or Sister, or Nurse, or any of the many titles she wore with pride throughout her 88 years of life.

As a baby, her grandfather called her his “little pride and joy” which stuck and she was henceforth known as “Joy.”

Born in Donegal, Ireland and raised with her sister Terrie and cousin Desna, Joy proudly shared her Irish heritage and loved being asked about her accent over 88 years of life.

Joy moved to London to pursue nursing at St. Mary’s hospital, a decision that completely changed her life path when she met Andrew Munster, a brash young resident at the Hammersmith Hospital.

After getting married, Joy and Andrew moved to the United States to pursue Andrew’s surgical career. Even though Joy thought the move was temporary, she spent the rest of her life in the United States having three daughters Andrea (Yoch), Tara (Girch) and Alexandra (Kendall) (so named in case one of the young English princes wanted to marry her and she needed a royal name.)

Joy was a magnetic presence with an unusual sense of humor. People were drawn in by her accent (which never wavered despite 60 years living in America), but they stayed for the person speaking. Name a country? She went there! Name a Broadway show? She saw the original cast! And at least three quarters of the time, this was true (which is often enough to never be able to tell the remaining quarter apart). If you left her alone for five minutes at a party, at the Baltimore Museum of Art, or at church, you would come back to find a crowd of new friends. Everywhere she went, she brought a lot of people a lot of Joy.

Settling in Baltimore in 1975, Joy continued her nursing career while raising the girls and supporting Andrew. Joy never sat still and was always on the move from carpools to Cathedral or going to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra or down to Charleston to Folly Beach. The house in Baltimore and Folly was always full of friends and strangers – no one was left alone on holidays and the table was always full of great food and conversation with interesting people from around the world who were always welcome.

Joy and Andrew were known for their epic parties which went on until late into the night and always ended with the carpets being rolled up and furniture moved for dancing. The evenings ended with the Carpenters on the stereo while everyone danced. Whatever the occasion, Joy would throw a party. First communions, graduations, prom and St. Patrick’s Day were all good reasons to bring friends together and make new friends. She was especially happy to have big parties to celebrate the birth of her grandchildren - Ryan Yoch, Ben Yoch and Chelsea Kendall.

Even after moving to Charleston at the age of 85 and in failing health, Joy had to leave the house each day. She enjoyed her daily outings with her caregivers and her required stop for her beloved coffee (A doppio macchiato.)

Joy is survived by her daughters and their husbands Andrea (Steve), Tara (Marty) and Alexandra (Matt) and her sister Terrie and cousin Desna along with her grandchildren Ryan, Ben and Chelsea. All three of the girls were with her in her final days and she passed peacefully in her sleep but wanted to make sure everyone knew that she considered herself to be very lucky for the life she lived. We were all very lucky to have had Joy in our lives.

In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to Healthcare for the Homeless in Baltimore where she was proud to have been a nurse and provide care.
