Joseph Sopalsky, 90, of James Island, passed away Monday, October 10, 2011.
He was born December 22, 1920, in Yonkers, NY. A member of The Greatest Generation, he was a WWII veteran with service in the Panama Canal Zone and in France and Germany with the U.S. Army's 42nd (Rainbow) Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star. After his discharge he had a long career as a quality control inspector at the Ford Motor Company Assembly Plant in Mahwah, NJ. Following his retirement, he and his wife, to whom he was deeply devoted, moved to James Island, where he enjoyed gardening and was active in senior citizens' groups and the VFW. He will always be remembered as a kind, patient, and loving husband and father. The funeral and burial will be private.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy, 91, and two daughters and a son: Donna Sopalsky of Garnerville, NY, Barbara Carlson (Larry) of Wadmalaw Island, SC, and John Sopalsky (Sally) of Goshen, NY, and two granddaughters: Christine of Goshen, NY, and Jessica of Boston, MA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
