Joseph Lee Smith

Joseph Lee Smith, Jr., 73, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Jean Strickland-Smith entered into eternal rest Monday, November 21, 2016. His Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday November 25, 2016 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends in Stuhrs West Ashley Chapel one hour prior to service. Burial will be Private.

Joe was born December 1, 1942 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Joseph Lee Smith, Sr., and Dorothy Miller Smith. He retired from the Federal Government in 1998. He was an active member of Charleston Elks Lodge 242. Joe was elected to and served five years as a Trustee, his final year he served as Chairman. Joe was active on several lodge committees, but his special interest involved activities directed toward Veterans. He served as a member of the Veterans Committee and subsequently chaired the committee for three years. Joe was awarded Elk of the Year and Officer of the Year. For three years he served as editor of the lodge's monthly publication. Joe cherished his Elk Brothers and leaves behind fond memories of the charitable and community works the lodge does. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Jean Strickland-Smith, daughter, Blair Smith; sister, Barbara S. Ferrell (Stephen) of Goldsboro, SC; brother, Lyle D. Smith (Doris) three step-children, Elizabeth O'Brien (Butch), Michael F. Skipper (Anna), and Stacia L. Branum; step-grandchildren, Sara S. Burks (Drew), Emily Skipper, Landis B. Pino (Jason), Anje E. Cox (Joey Reasoner), and Thomas Cox III., (Catherine); seven great-grandchildren, Ryleigh O'Brien, Malissa, Madison and Marley Pino, Jace Reasoner, Thomas Rutledge and Cate M. Cox; nephews, Bill and Michael Oldham; nieces, Sarah Smith, Rachel Driscoll, Stephanie Thompson.

Memorials may be made to Charleston Elks Lodge, #242, 1113 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Charleston, SC 29407 or a charity of one's choice.
