Joseph "Joey" Paul Hayes, 65, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at the Charleston Hospice Center after a year long battle with cancer on Sunday, July 1, 2018. There will be a Sunset Memorial Service held Friday, July 20, at 7:30 PM on the pier at the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Joe was born August 19, 1952 in Raleigh, North Carolina, son of the late Paul Revere Hayes and the late Madeline Smithy Salmon. Growing up in Goldsboro, NC with his older sister, Gloria Price of Knoxville, TN and his twin sister, Joann Pope of Zephyr Hills, FL. Joe learned the value of kindness, honesty and rewards of hard work which followed him all of his life. He learned these values at the Odd Fellows Home where he and his sisters were residents. Joe joined the United States Navy and traveled the world. He returned to Raleigh and began a lifelong career in paint contracting. Following that, in DC for awhile and returning to Raleigh, NC. He moved to Charleston on March 1, 2016 and was so very proud to call this lovely city his home.
He is survived by not only his sisters, but his loving wife, Pam Coopersmith of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Those that knew him were always touched by his kind, gentle and peaceful presence, which was with him until the end. He leaves behind many lifelong friends, who will hold him in their hearts for a very long time to come.
