Joseph Freddie (Fred) Harmon, Sr., 78, of Charleston, SC, passed away on June 10, 2016.Visitation will begin at 1 PM on June 15th 2016 followed by the funeral service the same day at 2 PM at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel at 2180 Greenridge Road, North Charleston, SC. Interment will occur at Carolina Memorial Park. Fred was born in Charleston, SC on Nov 2, 1937.
He graduated from Murray Vocational high school in 1958 and applied his extraordinary mechanical and problem solving skills as a career mechanic who served in the Army National Guard, taught automotive technology classes at Trident Technical Center and retired in 2000 from the Naval Weapons station in Goose Creek, SC. He was passionate about aviation technology and served in the Civil Air Patrol as a volunteer pilot for many years. He also enjoyed restoring classic automobiles and both building and racing sailboats with his family.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents Alan Harmon and Ruth Bradwell Harmon; brothers Frank Harmon and Edward Harmon; and sisters Vivian Tisdale and Virginia Linton.Fred, a devoted believer in Jesus Christ, lived a selfless life marked by his deep love and commitment to his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Peggy Vance Harmon; sons Dr. Joseph F. Harmon, Jr. (wife, Rosie) and Jon Randal Harmon (wife, Karen); his daughter Melanie Harmon Buhler (husband, Paul); sisters Verna Towler and Elizabeth Orander; grandchildren Dr. Ashley Harmon McMillan, Sarah Harmon Williams, Taylor Harmon, Leslie Buhler Rainer, Patrick Buhler, Heather Buhler and Noah Harmon; newborn great grandson Burke McMillan; nephew Roger Harmon; and other family and friends.
