Joseph Wardell Clark, Jr., 86, husband of Colleen Rothell Clark of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina died Monday, September 3, 2012. The relatives and friends of Joseph W. Clark are invited to attend his Memorial Service on Friday, September 7, 2012 in Sullivan's Island Baptist Church at 4:00 pm. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, September 7, 2012 in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the family residence in Hobcaw Point, Mt. Pleasant, SC. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Joe was born February 21, 1926 in Columbia, South Carolina, son of the late Joseph Waddell Clark, Sr. and Bessie Walker Clark . He was the Owner of Clark Heating and A/C Inc. He attended the Citadel and served in the United States Navy during World War II and then graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Industrial Management in 1950. Joe was instrumental in the formation of Heating and Air Conditioning Ordinances for the City of Columbia. He was the Past President of the Run Club of Columbia, Past President of the Optimist Club of Columbia, Past President of Kiwanis of Columbia, Past President of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Columbia, a Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Columbia where he taught Sunday School. He was also a Deacon of Sullivan's Island Baptist Church. He was also an associated member of Highland United Methodist Church of Highlands, North Carolina.
For many years, Joe and his wife, Colleen, divided their time between their home in Highlands, NC and Mt. Pleasant, SC. They were active participates in the tennis programs in both Mt. Pleasant and Highlands. He competed in the Cooper River Bridge Run for several years and was a winner in his age division after age 70.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Colleen R. Clark of Mount Pleasant, SC, three daughters, Anne Clark Abbott and her husband, Julian, of Sumter, SC, Susan Clark Marlowe and her husband, Bobby, of Mount Pleasant, SC and Carol Clark Williams and her husband, David, of Mount Pleasant, SC; three sons, Joseph Wardell Clark, III and his wife, Wanda, of Columbia, SC and Mt. Pleasant, SC, Mark S. Clark and his wife, Evora, of Greenville, SC, and Cary R. Clark and his wife, Megan, of Chapel Hill, NC; one sister, Nancy Clark Roberts of Columbia, SC; eleven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
He was always a lot of fun to be around and most people who knew him will remember him for his charm and his sense of humor. He loved his family very much and will be sorely missed.
