Jorgen Helvig Petersen, Sr., 73, of Columbia, South Carolina, husband of the late Marie Jumonville Petersen passed away on Monday, March 17, 2014. His Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 21, 2014 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road. A private inurnment will take place at Plantation Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel.
Jorgen was born December 23, 1940 in Copenhagen, Denmark, son of the late Valfred Erhardt Petersen and Gerda Helvig Larsen Petersen. He was a veteran of the Royal Dutch Navy and went on to serve as a cook with various Danish steamship lines. Jorgen worked with the Danish Consulate in New Orleans, and served for a while in Kenner, LA as the President of the Lions Club as well as various other positions. As a Master Cordon Bleu Chef across Europe and in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Texas. A graduate of Culinary School in Europe, he was known for creating his signature dish of King Crab Wellington. He was a Regional Governor for Best Western, and worked at Holiday Inns of America and the Best Western Atrium Inn of North Charleston, SC. Jorgen was the owner/operator of Ocean Walk Suites, a Best Western affiliate in Hilton Head Island, SC.
He is survived by his daughter, Yvette Buchanan and her husband, Nathan of Summerville, SC; his sons, Jorgen Petersen, Jr. and his wife, Lillian of Summerville, SC, Kevin Petersen and his wife, Laurie of Summerville, SC, Eric Petersen and his wife, Lois of Asheville, NC, and Randy Petersen of Candler, NC; his brother, Keld Petersen and his wife, Sannie of Copenhagen, Denmark; his eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brother-in-laws of New Orleans, LA, Charles Jumonville and Jerome "Jerry" Jumonville.
