Jonnie Mae Lee Gay

Jonnie Lee Gay of Mount Pleasant entered into eternal rest the afternoon of September 29th, after a short illness. The family will receive friends at J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 3 o'clock after which there will be a memorial service to celebrate Mrs. Gay's life in the Chapel at 4 o'clock, graveside service to follow.   Mrs. Gay was born April 5, 1919 in Waycross Georgia, the daughter of the late Thomas Lester and Esther Hagen Lee.  She attended schools in Georgia.  She was married for 33 years to Major (ret) Herbert Gay, who preceded her in death in 1978. In the 1960's Major and Mrs. Gay retired in Mt. Pleasant to be close to her sister Tommie Lee Sottile of the Isle of Palms.  Mrs. Gay was an avid gardener and past president of the Alhambra Garden Club of Mount Pleasant.  She was an active member of her sewing club and an accomplished bridge player. She loved cooking and entertaining for her family and many, many friends. Mrs. Gay was a member of Hibben United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant.  Mrs. Gay is survived by her beloved daughter and best friend Penny Gay Vaigneur and husband Fred Vaigneur Jr., three grandsons, Fred Vaigneur III, Bryan Herbert Vaigneur and his wife, Elizabeth Baldwin Vaigneur, Blake Hall Vaigneur, two great grandchildren, Caden Amann and Anna Whitley Vaigneur, also close family nieces and nephews, Carol Sottile Conway, Michael Sottile, Debbie Sottile Jones, John Durham, Barbara Lee Broward and sister in law Christine Lee. She is also survived by her devoted caretaker of the last four years, Ms. Florence Fordham. She was preceded in death by her two loving daughters, Amelia Gay Richards and Brenda Gay Kelley, four brothers, Lyman Lee, Vernon Lee, Jack Lee and Otto Lee and two sisters, Tommie Lee Sottile and Billie Lee Durham.  Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be given to Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Boulevard, Mt. Pleasant, SC  29262 or ones favorite charity.
