Johnny Leo Saunders, Jr.

Johnny Leo Saunders, Jr. 87, of North Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Monday, December 16, 2024. His Funeral Service will be held Sunday, December 22, 2024 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road North Charleston, SC 29406 at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Riverview Memorial Park 3715 Azalea Dr, North Charleston, SC 29405. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Northwoods Chapel.

Johnny was born June 19, 1937 in Charleston, South Carolina, he was a Southern Baptist, son of Johnny Leo Saunders, Sr. and Mary Harrelson. He graduated from Murray Vocational, served in the Navy from 1955 - 1959 and attended North Greenville Junior College. He was a newspaper delivery man for The Charleston Evening Post and The News and Courier. He also worked for Gobel Television. He began a 43-year career as a railroad engineer for Southern Railway, now Norfolk Southern Railway. He served as a union chairman for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLE). Most recently he was the engineer ferrying BMWs from Columbia to Charleston. He enjoyed hunting while young, fishing, especially flounder gigging and shrimping and viewing sunsets at the beach. His family remembers a very compassionate kind loving man and how he took care of everybody including cooking homemade meals, grilling, and frying flounder and shrimp. He married Lillian Joanne Spivey on October 31, 1961 

He is survived by children: John Kevin Saunders (Shari) and Elizabeth Huffman (Robbie); grandchildren: Jessica Saunders, Drayton Huffman and Chris Bullock; great-grandchildren: Kaiden Tyler, Layla Rose and Cailee Grae; siblings: Mary Kitty Dowdy (Donald), Betty Taylor, Shirley Johnson and Gloria O'Neal (Hassie); and best friends: Bruce Cusack and Mary Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Ronald Saunders who died young.

In lieu of flowers, donation maybe made to American Cancer Society 269 Calhoun St, Charleston, SC 29401.
