Johnnie Gustavus "Gus" Bullard

Johnnie Gustavus Bullard, “Gus”, left this world August 18 .  He was 99 years and 1 month old.  Even though we will all miss him terribly, we know the love of his life, our mom and his wife of 71 years - Mary, is waiting on him with open arms at heaven's gate. The funeral service with military honors will be held Saturday, August 27, 2022, in Palmetto Presbyterian Church, 1720 Carolina Park Blvd. at 12:00 pm, followed by inurnment in the columbarium. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.


Daddy, Granddad, and GGPa was born July 18,1923 in Bladen County, NC. He was one of 7 children born to Oakley and Janie Bullard.  Gus joined the USMC in December 1942 and served in the South Pacific. After 4 years of active duty, he joined the Marine Corps Reserves followed by the National Guard until 1959. 

Gus first spotted Mary when she came into the post office where he was working. She arrived by train to teach in the local school. They were married in 1947 and had 71 years of happiness until she passed away. He always missed her and looked forward to the day they would be together again.

Gus was a retired Postal Inspector with a very busy career, but family always came first. He is survived by his daughters Barbara Jervey (Ned), Jan Bullard (Scott Williams),grandchildren Travis Jervey (Christy), Shana Jervey, great grandchildren Frazier and Johnnie Jervey and his sisters Virginia Howell ,Jane Marion ,sister-in-law Marilene Collins and numerous nieces and nephews.   He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Margaret and Lola Mae and brothers Fulton and Harold.

 The family would like to thank care givers Melissa, Beverly and Towana for their kindness and loving care. Also thank you to Amedysis Home Health, especially Ed, Sonia , and Jason for their compassion and care.  He never failed to appreciate and thank all of them.
